Hello All,

As you may all be aware, we are in the process of producing the Yearbook this year. It will have photos of all the third year students but will also have sections about Falmouth, Cornwall, Woodlane, Tremough and gernerally life in Falmouth.

Although it is aimed at third years, anyone will be able to buy one.

I am looking for any photos that I could use in these sections. Good shots of the beaches, in town, nights out, anything really.

I am also looking for any written articles about life in Falmouth. The only criteria is that they need to be quite short and quirky, nothing boring or long. How about a piece about swimming in the sea at 3am, or standing outside Rems for hours after its closed, or jazz nights in the Star and Garter, or open mic at Jacobs. Anything that is relevent to student life in Falmouth.

You can either email them to me, or drop them into the FXU office or give me a ring if you need to.

This is your yearbook so I want to include as many of your views as possible.

Cheers

Is it time Cornwall formed a full-devolved, regional assembly for this part of the West Country? Since the “Declaration for a Cornish Assembly”, made in July 2000 by Mabyon Kernow, the Cornish Constitutional Convention has registered increased backing for the idea. Cornwall Councils MORI poll showed a 9% increase in favour of an elected, local, parliament between 2002 and 2003. Of course there are arguments for and against such a plan; some calling it separatism and the opposition demanding a greater say in how Cornwall is governed. It is a subject anyone living in Cornwall cannot ignore or refuse comment.

So does anyone have anything to say?

For any fans of CBeebies out there the two guys that are better known as Big Chef and Little Chef are also a stand up comedy act called Electric Forecast. They are performing at the Woodlane bar on the 16th February but having had a member of staff mention that it is a regular on their morning TV's, we were thinking about approaching them to see if they would do a show for anyone that would like to see them as Big Cook Little Cook.
We were thinking of hosting a show around 6.30 for an hour or so but this will totally be dictated by demand. Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in bringing any youngsters you know along to.

Sikth @ princess pavilion, falmouth - 8th october 2005

This October sees Cornwall set to host one of its finest rock/metal gigs to date. Princess Pavilions, situated in the harbour town of Falmouth, welcomes nationally acclaimed London based Metal band Sikth to its stage with support from the crème de la crème of the young Cornish metal/heavy rock scene (Dead Without Issue and Nook). The gig is set to be a highly popular event bringing music lovers from not just all over Cornwall but the outlining counties together in one evening of sonic warfare.

Sikth started life in 2001 aiming to bring ‘ pride and originality ' back into heavy music. Their chance to climb further up in the British music scene came when Radio One offered them the chance to play a live session at Maida Vale studios in London . The band were one of the first unsigned bands to be granted such a chance, and this chance enabled more doors to open for the band and continue to build upon their already hard earned firm music foundations. In 2002 they embarked upon the mostly sold out ‘How May I Help You' tour, and also entered the studio to work on their self produced album ‘ The Trees Are Dead And Dried Out, Wait For Something Wild'. This was collaborated with music industry professionals like Andrew Scarth (Skunk Anansie, Dream Theatre) and Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Funeral for a Friend, Fear Factory) . In between the production of this album the band managed to perform a sell out gig at the London Mean fiddler, the location being a 1200 capacity venue. When Sikth finally released ‘ The Trees…' in 2003 it brought with it a barrage of highly positive feedback and press which was highly deserved. In 2004 the band took part in the ‘Extreme Dojo' event in Japan, touring with the bands Anthrax, Dillinger Escape Plan, Killswitch Engage and Burnt by the Sun, this was met with much admiration and adulation from Japanese fans.

This gig promises to be an astounding mash of metal mayhem for all those that attend. For old Sikth fans of the southwest it is a chance to see new songs due to be place upon their 2 nd album that is currently being work on (still without a title and without a solid launch date). And for those who are oblivious to the sound that Sikth produce, it offers the chance for a re-education in heavy rock/metal and a new awakening to the talent that is currently being home grown from our shores. This promises to be the first of many gigs from concerts southwest who are aiming to cater for the rock music fans of the southwest.

If you yourself are a metal/heavy music fan, have a space on your calendar on the 8 th of October and support the newly growing underground music scene in Cornwall, purchase yourself a ticket for this gig at Princess Pavilions Box Office or at www.amplifeyeshop.com

Glastonbury Festival Student Workers Needed

D D Events Ltd are, for the second year running, offering paid and voluntary static stewarding work on the perimeter fence line at the festival.

All workers have to be physically fit, prepared to stand for long periods of time in all extremes of whether, be police vetted by us and over the age of 18. Most of all they must be happy to work alone which can get pretty boring after a couple of hours, however, the good news is that they get access into the festival, on top of this volunteers and paid workers both get free food whilst working allocated shifts, private camping in the security compound, clean toilets and showers !!!

The night shifts are paid at £7.00 per hour with a bonus of £1.00 per hour for carrying out all of the shifts that they have committed to, they have to work a minimum of four shifts, and these shifts last for twelve hours so this work is very demanding, that is why it is so well paid

The day shifts are voluntary, and consist of three eight hour shifts, which are allocated on arrival at the event, when volunteers are off duty they will have access to the event. In order to ensure that the volunteers return from the festival and carry out all of their shifts we are forced to charge a deposit of £150.00.

If you require any further information please visit us at www.ddevents.co.uk or if you wish to discuss anything please contact us by telephone on 0117 939 1911 our telephones are only manned weekdays between 6.30PM - 9.30PM and weekends 10.00AM- 6.00PM.

April 13, 2005 -- Day of Silence

Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today.

What are you going to do to end the silence?

Voting in the UK - http://www.whoshouldyouvotefor.com/

Who Should You Vote For?

Who I'm Voting ForCollapse )

Is this site biased?

Who are you and why are you doing this?
We are Thoughtplay Ltd, a UK-based creative agency - find out more about us at ThoughtPlay. We are doing this partly because we thought it would be a fun and interesting thing to do, and partly to demonstrate how we can quickly and creatively respond to a challenge. From first thoughts of doing an election-related site to beta-testing was less than a month, with the work fitted around other projects.

This site aims to give an unbiased representation of how the major parties reflect your views on key policy issues. No-one associated with this site is a member of a political party, has received payment from a political party or received payment from any organisation pursing a political agenda. If a political party feels that we are misrepresenting them on a particular issue, we would ask an official party spokesperson to contact us directly by email and we would be happy to discuss their objection, and how they believe their policy should be represented.

Are you doing this on behalf of a political party or interest group?
No, this site is not designed to pursue any political agenda, it is intended purely as a comparative tool for voters.

Are any of the people behind this site members of or contributors to political parties?
We repeat, none of the people behind this site are members of or contributors to any political party. One member of the team does play poker on a regular basis with members/former members of all three parties but, while he might claim otherwise, the money he loses to them is due to lack of skill rather than a desire to make a political donation.

Why do you only compare five parties?
While there is a stronger participation by nationwide minority parties in this election than is historically the case, we have excluded them as without exception they are primarily focused on single issues and do not offer broad, credible manifestos. We have therefore concentrated on the parties that are most represented across Britain and have a broad range of policies.

Once Again, the Best in the West [Feb. 3rd, 2005|03:00 pm]

Falmouth College of Arts has once again proved itself to be the leading player in terms of nurturing some of the country’s brightest talent as a current student and recent graduates from its BA(Hons) Illustration programme win a stream of major national awards.

Current third-year student, Irfana Biviji, has been presented with the most prestigious award that the world of illustration can offer - the Association of Illustrators (AOI) Images 29 Gold Award for Best Student.

Recent graduates, Hannah McVicar and Emma Dibben also stood out from the crowd and had their illustrations selected for the AOI Images 29 annual.

Images is an annual awards book that is distributed free to over 4000 commissioners of illustration, and it is considered to be British illustration’s most influential document. Each year, illustrations are selected for inclusion from hundreds of entries by seven separate juries comprising influential figures from the creative industries - art directors from advertising, periodical and book publishing, illustrators' agents and practising illustrators. The work featured is by artists of all levels of experience and covers the many different styles of illustration that are commissioned.

“This is not only fantastic news for Irfana, Hannah and Emma, but also for the course,” said BA(Hons) Illustration Programme Leader, Alan Male. “There are literally hundreds and hundreds of entries each year and these are whittled down to twelve or fifteen, which then go on to be part of a major, national exhibition. To have three FCA students in the final list is such an achievement, and for Irfana to win outright and be awarded the Gold is remarkable. I congratulate them all.”

FCA’s BA(Hons) Illustration programme has a 40-year pedigree and has shown time and again that it produces graduates who go on to become very successful in their respective fields.

2004 is no exception with recent graduate, Leigh Hill, having been awarded a nominee commendation in the Best Short Animated Film category of the Royal Television Society’s Regional Awards for her piece, Fat Cat on the Farm, at a ceremony held in Plymouth last month.

Samara Bryan and Tom Frost, who graduated from the course in 2002, have also recently won the Society of Artists’ Agents’ London Transport Award against tough competition from hundreds of professional illustrators, as a result of which they will hold a major exhibition in London and see their work published.

For further information about BA(Hons) Illustration, please contact Admissions on 01326 211077, email admissions@falmouth.ac.uk or visit www.falmouth.ac.uk.
